I’m pretty sure I had seen a photo reminiscent of Elger Esser’s work when I saw one of his named in an interior design spread in this month’s Elle Decor. I’m fairly certain that he’s the artist whose amazing view of a lone row boat hangs in my friend Abby’s apartment though I can’t be completely positive. The scale, the earth-toned wash over the image – it all aligns.

I’m surprised by how much I enjoy the intense focus of his pieces as I typically like a more blurry, painterly approach.

His solitary looks at the water are great in their tranquility – looking at them brings a bit of calm I think.

The effects he puts on his images almost make them look organic themselves – mossy almost.

Like an old Coney Island postcard.

Love the above shot. The best part is that Esser was born in 1967 in Germany and is still taking photographs – I already messaged my friend who works at Christie’s in the contemporary department to learn more!
