Another artist I really liked while I was at the SoWa Open Market was Heather Pilchard. Both my mom and I seem to have an affinity for anything encaustic and we spotted Heather’s work from afar. The works she had brought with her were relatively small in scale – paintings, photos and pastel works.

Heather works out of Wellfleet, MA – on the Cape, which explains the colors and themes she depicts in her work.

I love the colors she uses, and how so many of her works look sun-touched. Additionally, while they depict natural elements – beaches, marshes, mountains, etc – she also does more abstract pieces, like a snapshot of the sky!

I also dig that Heather’s into bookbinding. When I lived in Telluride the school I taught at had an extensive bookbinding program – it’s an amazingly creative craft in my opinion and I like how Heather refers to it as additctive.

In my conversation with Heather I learned that her encaustic pieces have about 5-6 layers of wax on them, which doesn’t seem like too many to me…though I’ve never tried it myself.
