I got so excited about the artists I met at Renegade I forgot to keep introducing artists what I’ve known for years, people from college, and before. When I was in high school my parents sent me to art camp for years where I learned things you typically can’t learn in school, namely metalsmithing and glassblowing. At camp one year I met Jordan Taler, who later went to college with me too.
This isn’t your typical artwork or artist — Jordan’s creativity was way ahead of its time back when we were 15 but the culture at Skidmore allowed him to experiment much more.
These spherical “Monads” he makes are out of various objects and show different things, for example, the one above is made out of envelopes that were “returned” with the wrong address. I like the round shape he chose as it allows him to keep reinventing it but have some sort of framework at the same time.
The carrots above are to represent the awkwardness of running into people you sort of know at the market.
The above image is from his senior thesis, No Deadlines, all over campus he strung these orange cotton lines to represent the time he spent on campus, sometimes with one line, other times with a lot of lines. Another image is below.
It’s funny having known Jordan for almost 10 years and seeing him carve out a really awesome space for himself — I’m sure there’s more to come from him!
