Today my mom and I went on a discovery trip around town! We have a wedding to go to in a few hours so had to hustle our way around the city to check out some of the cool new stuff we’d heard was going on. First stop was Room 68, a new store in Jamaica Plain selling furniture, home goods, and decor items that have a highly attuned design sense. There we learned more about artist, Anthony Oliveto.

This lamp is made of cut masonite screwed roughly together. He makes these in pendants, floor lamps, etc. I imagine he has to soak the masonite to get it to bend that way but honestly I don’t know what kind of give, if any, the boards have. They look like nests and messes of leather but are much harder and more sculptural in person.

Two of the store’s founders were in today and indulged us in looking at every piece, talking process and discussing their grand opening next weekend, all day Saturday and Sunday.

Tony’s pods are out of this world. Another thing I really like about him is that he lives in Omaha. My father’s family is from a small town in Nebraska and so it’s really really awesome to see these amazing works coming out of an area often thought of as a little sleepy.

These remind me of Michelle Lougee who I actually finally saw the works of in person today near the SoWa open market.

This piece, Ecliptic, is part of Tony’s Fissures collection – I think this is awesome. I can’t tell but it looks like it might be painted red on the back so that it glows red on the wall.

So cool.
