Bethany Mitchell

After nearly a week of being under the weather, I’m feeling marginally alive again. I can almost breath through my nose! In the spirit of the laziest four days of my life being behind me I’m posting about a young woman who seems to be doing a LOT with her time, Bethany Mitchell. I’m pretty sure I found her on Pinterest, which while I still love, I’m struggling with the functionality of. I feel like they have me follow people I didn’t ask to follow!

The above is from her drawing portfolio from 2010, I assume it’s ink on cut paper spiral though I’m not quite sure. I love the repetitive qualities of the drawing and knowing how carefully it must have been done.

This one, No Use Crying Over Spilt Microbes, looks drawn as well, however, many of her pieces are mixed media with drawing, paper, yarn, knitting, etc. all in one.

I like her representations of microbes, influenza, diseased leaves, etc. The health / cell related artwork is interesting to me these days. In her own artist statement she says, “work evolves as the drawn mark and stitched form invade, colonise and grow.” That language seems pretty “invasive” to me – much like health issues can be.

I can’t quite discern how old Bethany is from her bio – she’s from the UK but it’s hard to figure out what school she got out of at what age. I imagine she’s close to my age. I love the idea of sewing something that need not be sewn, like paper! I also like that the work flows from the objects to the floor.

So beautiful – these really look like cells on a petri dish to me.

These look like egg whites / yolks to me all in a pile, which is abnormal of course for eggs. This piece was displayed at the Winchester School of Art – I wish her site had more info on materials and size of her work, it’s hard to feel super informed without  more detail!
