I do have a habit of loving things that look like clouds here on the blog. I came across Angelica Bergamini’s work while poking around the site of Grey Area where “art is made functional and the functional is made art.” They work with many artists that appeal to me but none moreso than Angelica Bergamini and her thread, monofilament and bead works.

In her artist’s statement, Angelica says, “I think of Visual Arts as a form of energy, captured in a continuous process of regeneration and evolution, in which aesthetic and symbolic values melt along less traveled ancestral roads.” I love this.

I like the varied densities of her work. From monofilament to thread to metal I respond to her changes in weight of her works. It’s awesome that in one body of work you have boulders made of metal and clouds made of monofilament.

I think the above is crocheted thread – I can only imagine how long that might take…we’re going on year three with the Yurt project so…

These clouds are the first works of hers I saw and are potentially my favorite. In thinking about the qualities of monofilament I’ve spent the last few days wondering if she heats it to get that sort of jagged edge quality to it or if, when up close, it’s created by tons of little loops together. Whatever it is the way the light hits it truly looks like the tonality of clouds.

After writing on Bronwyn Oliver I had to include the above wire sculptures as they so much reminded me of her copper garden sculptures as well. Again it’s so interesting to compare these to each artist’s larger collection. Angelica’s are much more irregular in their build – they almost look like cocoons and Bronwyn’s are quite regular but they share a similar final “look.”

Those who know this blog know why I love this work. Looks like it could be a part of the crochet coral reef!
