A few years ago, when I had just moved to New York, my family came to visit. I think it must have been for Thanksgiving as my brother, Michael, came up from Baltimore as well. We went out to the Brooklyn Museum of Art as we wanted to see the Ron Mueck exhibit. I wasn’t at all sure what I was getting into except that my family had said his works were very lifelike but in irregular, non-human sizes. They were right.
We were also able to watch an extraordinary film about the process, how he manages to make the rubber look so fleshy and how he looks at hair and shadow and light to create these works perfectly. It was sufficiently weird.
