Nora Kogan’s line, St. Kilda’s, is as enchanting for the work she produces as for her personal story. Having lived in Odessa, Italy, Australia, and Japan amongst other places all before moving to New York it’s hard to pinpoint the largest influence on her work but by looking at the pieces you know that they all contributed to who she is herself, which she expresses amazingly through her designs.
Sometimes I think people spend too much time making their work representational instead of just enjoyable and perhaps it’s just because I don’t know the deeper meaning of the snake, skull, and tiger tooth to Nora, however, I like that I can just enjoy the way her pieces look and think about how wearable they must be!
Now Nora is in Brooklyn where St. Kilda has their first real-life store in Park Slope – I’m going to plan a trip out there when it’s thoroughly warm out here.
She designs her work with the deep knowledge of how metal works are constructed, critical, I think, to a designer’s skill.
These “Safari” earrings may be my birthday gift to me next week!
