A few weeks ago I went to an event at ABC Carpet and Home hosted by the New York Women Social Entrepreneurs. The panel presentation was on sustainable sourcing and fairly traded goods and one of the women on the panel was all about textiles. She talked about how she can go into communities and work to reinvigorate the creativity of traditional textile designs and as a result inspire younger generations to be interested in them again. Aboubakar Fofana of Mali, seems to be doing this in his own traditions with Indigo.

Portière Noren

Indigo is such an amazing pigment – I wish I could read Fofana’s website but my French is in terrible shape and the English button doesn’t appear to be working.

Couvre-lit bogolan

His patterns are modern but traditional and he sticks to re-imaging pallettes that are typical for Mali textiles.

kimono

This is fabric for a kimono it appears online. All of his textiles are organically woven as well.

Etoles de soie - teintes végétales

Not sure what this is – but I like it.
