Today was a great day – after my brunch I was in Soho and remembered that the Droog store had reopened. I walked over and met one of the shop clerks as I had a question. He, it turns out, used to be really into fibers and textiles and told me all about felt artist Claudy Jongstra. He described some of the work that she did as she uses wool with other fibers like silk to create art, architectural elements and some fashion pieces.
Many of Claudy’s pieces appear to be panels that can fill a room as artwork and then other, denser panels that can actually be part of the walls and integrated in structural elements – like the fiber of a home.
A lot of it looks like Mongolian lambswool – according to the man at Droog she has her own flock of rare and ornate sheep from which she makes her pieces.
As she blends various fibers her results are as beautiful as they are irregular.
I’m not sure if she covered trees with felt or if she felted wool into tree shapes but either way its a great installation.
I’m not really sure what the above is but it’s beautiful!
I enjoy her weaving as well though her felting dominates her work, which is cool too!
