Another find at my recent journey up to the Cooper-Hewitt was Pernelle Fagerlund. I have spent some time in Copenhagen in the past and my favorite part of the city is in fact the Danish Design Center – my brother’s kitchen pendant lamp from there was his big gift from my time abroad! It’s no surprise to me that Pernelle is Danish – she works with textiles, naturally, and is, like me, very into underwater elements as inspiration.
As every bio on her I can find states, she merges textiles and furniture design – much as I seek to merge textiles and architecture. I like that she replicates sort of a pebble riverbed in felt while at the same time it looks cellular and biological in many ways.
This could be a Puli puppy or a Komondor – if only those two types of dogs came as redheads! I spent my weekend looking at pictures of the dogs and when I saw this work I laughed outloud.
The piece above is from her Textile Dictatorship work – it’s a huge piece, in which people can sit and take a cat nap or whathaveyou. I like that she creates different purposes for her work but retains a continuity in appearance, pallette, and theme.
