Last week, after my day in San Francisco, I went up to Sonoma for a few days as I’ve never been up there before and Steph was running her half marathon on that Sunday. While there we went to many vineyards including one called the Hess Collection, which was recommended by my aunt as it also has a contemporary art collection.
While at the exhibition I learned about an artist named Magdalena Abakanowicz – of Poland. The collection was organized by artists – clusters of their work together in little vignettes. Initially I was drawn to her use of burlap and resin to make various forms.
Then I realized that she also makes far more interesting pieces to me – out of woven textiles that she calls Abakans.
The orange Abakan above is one that’s in the Hess Collection as well. You can basically crawl inside the hole in the front and stand there not touching any piece of it – they’re that big. Another image is below.
Seriously huge weaving.
When I got home from CA I explored her website more and found that, as above, she’s doing interesting things with ropes of various diameters being woven together. This is awesome.
They’re all so beautiful and is such rich colors. She also does interesting 2D works as seen below.
