Today on Design*Sponge I was reading some back-posts and came across information on an upcoming exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Design, Slash: Paper Under The Knife featuring Andreas Kocks.
Given the scale of Andreas’ work I felt I needed to post these pics as I’m about to go on vacation to work on a huge project of my own.
The work above looks like one of my amoebas — but it’s all cut paper. Awesome!
Some of Andreas’ works take up whole walls and some are entire rooms.
I like that Andreas sticks to fairly monotone constructions — too much color in these might be too busy.
Hanging his works from the ceiling, having them grow out of the walls, etc. makes these feel very biological in nature. They make the observer, even on the computer screen feel pretty small — I can’t wait to see what they’re like in person.
As below they also appear very explosive, like someone just launched a cannonball into a pool or a paint ball hit the wall — a huge paintball.
The paper appears very dense and layered as well — the black looks inky too — like the paper is over-saturated.
In addition to his paper works, which are sculptural in their own right, Andreas also done some great 3D works using one of my favorite materials, gold leaf! The below is a very cool representation of one of my favorite forms, the Hive.
