The idea of weaving with unique fibers is one I’m looking forward to exploring more while I’m home for the next few weeks. Marianne Kemp does just that with horsehair. She makes both works of art as well as consumer textiles.
Marianne uses fibers from horses tails in the Far East and Mongolia — a personal soft spot of mine. Using them both dyed and as they are grown naturally.
The above is to look like a fish’s mouth smiling — I like the imagery.
Close up of the fish’s mouth — there’s so much twisting, looping, and knotting of the fibersĀ — I’m not sure what the backing textile is — perhaps more woven horsehair too.
I love these great works of wall art, spirals of horsehair coming out in a dome-like pattern.
This full horsehair kimono is so beautiful — I’m not sure how large it is, and it’s clearly not opaque, but I’m sure it looks beautiful on a wall with the glossiness of the hair capturing light well.
The same can be said for these gold rods! Good thing that Marianne makes lightshades as well.
Who knew a horsehair wig for what looks like a ceramic dome could be so cool. The dome is so wonderful in this — it looks like a mini-yurt.
