As a result of this blog and the work I’m doing over at the Yurt Alert, sometimes people reach out to me! These people are often other wonderful fiber arts experimenting in the medium somehow. This happened just last week when I got an invitation from Jennifer Raish, who has a show up, right now, at the Jimena Garcia Gallery on Stanton in NYC. Sadly I’m traveling to SF right now so can’t go check her stuff out but her Tumblr and DripBook offer some great imagery.
Interestingly, the invite that she sent me was for her show, Rebirth: Recent Works of Art and Fashion and her pieces are really both. Wearable art is not a new term and Jennifer’s pictures don’t always do the intricacy of the pieces justice but you can certainly get the message. These are detailed pieces that reflect the body, wearer, and the crochet / knit form.
Her materials look pretty sumptuous with their wispiness off of the fibers. It’s interesting to me to think about a constraining garment, like the one above, but out of a soft, delicate, easy to damage material. Talk about juxtaposition.
As Jennifer is a fashion designer ultimately a lot of her work comes across as more functional in form and material. The scarf above I like because of the color, layering, and thickness of the strands.
Conversely, I love this dress because of its lightness, pattern and this photo too is wonderful. I feel as though I see a lot of people working in as weightless as possible knits and then those that work in dense thick, extreme knits — it’s refreshing to see someone who can do both in design and artistic creation.
