A few days ago the blog, Design*Sponge, listed out the winners of their scholarships and Misha Kahn was the top undergraduate winner. I was curious as to what garnered her the top honors and it was obvious upon visiting her site. She makes my yurt project looks small!
Her “Egg” is 12 feet tall by 10 feet wide and is made of steel, plywood and spray foam (I imagine that’s similar to spray insulation). Man would the yurt be easier if it had an internal structure! It’s got a chandelier inside and can fit many guests it appears.
Misha’s “Couch” is also inspiring given my own projects. It’s made up on 200 feet of hand dyed velvet rope – makes me realize how much 2700 feet of felted cord really is! I love the color of this piece and imagine it might be pretty compfortable.
This work, “Bees” is terrific as well – I have been a fan of the bee since my time on Elba and the hive relationship to the yurt has also been quite strong. This one, of melted sheet glass and maple burl is perfect for what it’s trying to represent. The glass has a honey like look and comfortingly rich color. I can’t wait to see more work from this young artist!
I also love her “Nest” work, which appears to have a DIY component of it in order for it to be made fluffy by its owner. It comes just as an armature from what I can deduce.
