Driving through London last week I spotted a rug hanging in a window – I quickly whipped around (I was in the back seat) and jotted the name down on a lark, Luke Irwin. Turns out it’s an awesome thing I did because Luke’s custom rug making studio makes some pieces that are reminiscent of many of the repetitive art pieces I’ve loved before.
It’s no surprise why I love the above rug – I mean, it’s entitled, “Urchin” – what’s not to like! I’m also very very into green these days and this green is mossy and saturated.
The above is called the Ayippa Grass rug in blue – more to come on the original artist behind the rug, Joy Kngwarreye.
How beautiful are these rugs! We decided on a red and beige jute rug for the dining room – it’s West Elm’s Kente Jute Rug, but had we not found that one at a very affordable price who knows what we could have imagined up for Luke’s group to work on – they do tons of custom work. Maybe in another lifetime.
I mean it’s pretty self explanatory why I’m such a fan of Luke’s designs but in addition to them being beautiful he also works with artisan groups in Nepal to make his pieces. His site notes that, “the weaving technique is Tibetan and as there was no indigenous weaving tradition in Nepal this was imported when the Chinese invaded Tibet in the late 1950’s.” The business Luke’s works give this area gives them not only sustained income but the company also gives back to an educational fund for the kids of their artisans out of the profits from the rugs.
I couldn’t stop myself from clipping more and more pics of his pieces. They’re so amazing!
As we’re so into trellis patterns I had to include the one above. Very neat!
