Heike Weber

While I know I’m late to the party again, I recently discovered StumbleUpon and have lost countless hours to the Stumble button. It’s addictive. The other night, deep, deep in a hole of of the internet I came upon this post on a blog called BumBumBum and the work of Heike Weber, I was floored.

This piece is made of plastic cord on pins and I love the neon color.

What’s that, you ask? That’s permanent marker drawn on a vinyl floor in what looks like a house in Germany.  I write about a lot of artists who repeat the same technique over and over – they create patterns that grow out of each other – this is the pinacle of all of that!

They are just incredible. I have no idea if Heike goes ove a line repeatedly or if it’s just a really big marker – I don’t know if there’s a pattern to start or if it’s allowed to form organically but whatever it is it’s something unto itself from a patience standpoint.

Close up, ludicrous.

I could look at these all day – I want them all over my ceiling or on a kitchen floor someday in lieu of tiles.

The scale of these pieces is pretty mindblowing – this one in particular is so fabulous because of the little dome shapes that make up the whole. They remind me of a Dr. Seuss book.

Weber does other things than permanent marker drawings – these cut out rugs are very neat from a patterning perspective. I’m not 100% sure what the material is but they almost look like felt!

There were also patterns before the repetitive wave shapes – there were wobbly grids that would make epic textile patterns, which I strongly encourage Weber to get into!

This looks like an enormous 2D urchin to me, just laying on the beach, deflated, exhausted but still beautiful. I feel like that’s a pretty good description of what happens when you take something out of the ocean that’s meant to be there…

This piece is entitled “Bic” – I can imagine that each of these was done with the ink from one single pen. I think I remember seeing other people do things like that – start a project, see how far they can get with some unit of supplies. These are beautiful in that they’re just color and repetitive motion, not actually representational to me.

I love all of these pieces – paper cutouts have sort of fallen to my backburner lately but this one is very cool.

Ground down styrofoam…seriously.

I love the horizontal stripe of these objects is just so cool. They look great just lined up against the wall but would look incredible as a series in our hallway…maybe someday.

“Pig” – fitting – so cute!
