Emily Dvorin is a self-defined sculptural basketmaker. She works in vessel format but uses recycled, upcycled materials that are commonly thought of as commercial products, including but not limited to wire, fabric, plastics, etc. She uses these materials to discuss overconsumption, “societal excess, and throwaway consumerism.”

In using the vessel shape she ends up creating spherical pieces, which It hink are great. She has no formal art training, which is interesting too – sometimes I find that that leads to a less refined aesthetic but Emily’s pieces are still quite polished. She also has a fabulous website with tons of info and professional photographer, which I appreciate as a sharer of images.

A lifetime ago I took a “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure” class, which is, just as the name implies, is about making something out of basically, nothing. I was so little I can’t fully remember what I made but I had a flash memory of the class when looking at the piece above. Some of Emily’s pieces are titled but this one doesn’t appear to be online.

The above piece is called “A Tisket A Tasket” – it includes plastic spoons and forks, pull bottles, cable ties (one of Emily’s favorites it would seem), flower vials, straws, etc. Her work just goes to show the power of experimentation – you might not think to put all those things togethers but start building and you never know what can happen. To be fair, she may go into her sculptures with a full plan, I’m not sure.

I mean…these pieces are just beautiful – this one includes wire, satin, suede, cable ties, waxed linen, etc. The tonality is beautiful – I love monochromatic things.

Emily’s works are sometimes more industrial like the one above. Many of them would be intimidating to move / touch as they look not so much delicate but dangerous.

How beautiful. Sort of reminds me of a wave, or moving plants on a wall. I recommend checking out her other pieces on her site as well, they are incredibly diverse!
