I’m not sure what I’ll do here on the blog if Neil leaves the Netherlands. Without him there I never would have heard about the 2012 Paper Biennial Rijswijk at the Museum Rijswijk in The Netherlands. But no need to worry because there were incredible artists there to keep me busy including Georgia Gremouti, a Greek artist who seems to work mostly in paper.
Believe it or not but this piece moves. Made of paper, fabric and a motor it actually undulates.
This piece is from a series she’s done re-imaging the use case for paper bags. She essentially turns paper bags – disposable items – into permanent vessels and works of art. She calls the series False ID.
Another piece from False ID. What’s particularly cool to me is that Georgia actually went to MassArt here in Boston and graduated in ’98. This was following what appears to be a college level degree in guitar in Athens. Very cool.
A close up from False ID.
She also makes wearable art – this piece is made of fabric and metal it appears. It reminds me somewhat of Issay Miyake’s accordion clothing.
The above is her piece that was actually a part of the Biennial. I love how they’re hung and almost look like human sized cocoons.
