One of the best parts of the Museum of Art and Design is their floor of open studios where they teach classes and allow people to come watch various artists’ processes. One of the artists whose work was being displayed the day we went was that of Phyllis Kudder Sullivan who essentially weaves in ceramic.
Her touch is so organic in nature that I wonder if she has a plan when she starts or if she’s dictated by how quickly the ceramic dries in different areas of the work.
These are 3D, about a few feet by a few feet and seem to simply be objects though they could definitely be vessels made this way as well — her work reminds me of the Native American baskets my parents have collected for as long as I remember.
One of the projects that Phyllis left at the museum is the below “weaving” which is actually just made up of crescents of ceramic “cord” strategically placed next to each other — so smart!
