NYFA 2009 Arts Fellowships were awarded this year and I recently went through the crafts winners to see what they were making. One of my favorite artists, Emily Barletta, received one of the fellowships so I was intrigued to see which other artists were recognized. By this process I discovered Heather Hart, who, like me, is really into crochet, knitting and the use of public space.
Heather knits interiors and exteriors with fun colors and patterns that I’ll never know how to do!
Heather’s statement explains that she’s interested in exploring definitions of self and how there are so many pieces to the creation of an identity. I love that in her statement she conveys the importance of the repetition of her craft – I often call my crochet my therapy.
These industrial interiors are fabulous but her outdoor work is definitely where my interest lies.
She knit with fishing tie cording – inspiring.
Exactly what I needed to see today – it makes me think my current project may actually work.
She even knit in the subway!
